In Honduras 15 percent of the population lives on less than $1.25 a day, 63,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS, and widespread malnutrition is responsible for 34 percent of children experiencing stunting when they are between two and five years of age.
You many ask, “What does this mean to me?”
It means that children all over Honduras are growing up in terrible impoverished situations. Children go days without food because their parents are unable to provide. They miss school because teachers are often on strike instead of at the school to teach.
POI has programs set up in four of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Tegucigalpa. At each program, children receive daily tutoring and reinforcement lessons, nutritious meals, and medical care for their entire family. These three simple things give children the opportunity to break the devastating chain of poverty.
What does sponsoring a child entail?
For $30 a month you can sponsor a child, providing them with all the things listed above. The impact you will make on your sponsors life is priceless, but they impact they will make on your life is indescribable.
“When I was in Honduras, I met a little girl named Diana. I knew as soon as I met her that if she didn’t have a sponsor then it would be me! It’s hard because neither of us can really speak to each other, but that doesn’t matter.
On my third trip, I met Diana’s best friend, Yelsi. After coming home, I knew I needed to sponsor Yelsi as well. I pray for Yelsi and Diana every time they cross my mind. One thing I do believe about sponsoring these two little Honduran girls is that it has impacted my life more than anything else I’ve ever done,” said Denver Hall, student at the University of Memphis.
Sponsoring a child is a great way to involve your family in changing the life of a child.
Kim McDaniel explains how sponsorship has impacted her and her family:
“What I love about POI is that, every dollar I give goes directly to my sponsor child. My family and I can connect with our child through trips, letters and small gifts, the relationships are so rich and personal. I truly don’t believe there is any better use of my giving than to impact the life of a child spiritually, emotionally, and physically.”
